Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter (CHCAA) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on March 18, 1979 by twenty-two college-educated women. Currently, the chapter’s 84 members take pride in serving the diverse communities in Orange and Chatham counties.
Since it’s chartering in 1979, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter (CHCAA) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has mirrored its programs of community service in the image of its Grand Chapter and has worked diligently to develop and to implement a wide range of empowering programs and initiatives that emulate its shared mission with that of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
In the long-standing tradition of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., CHCAA continues to advance its efforts to strengthen African-American families and communities through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:
1. Educational Development
- Awarding $120,000+ of merit and need-based academic scholarships to high school seniors
- Conducting Teen Summit and Delta Seminars for teens to prepare them for college
- Book Bag/School Supply drive
- Jabberwock Educational Pageant
- Delta G.E.M.S. (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully)
2. Physical and Mental Health
- Sponsoring an annual MLK Blood Drive with the American Red Cross since 1990
- Conducting awareness programs on breast cancer, depression, and heart disease
- Empowering adolescent girls through self-enrichment activities
- Caregiver’s Stress Workshop Forum
- Annual Walk for Hunger
- Go Red for Women
- Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
- Queen of Hearts Gala (Heart Disease)
3. Economic Development
- Providing personal finance seminars for teenagers and adults
- Providing holiday baskets to needy families
- Habitat for Humanity of Orange County
- Thanksgiving Food Drive
4. International Awareness and Involvement
- Giving financial support to a hospital maternity wing in West Africa
- Collection of non-perishable items that were shipped to islands affected by recent hurricanes
- Collection of books in support of the library wing at Holy Cross RC Primary School, Sierra Leone, West Africa
- Building of a Water Well Project in Sierra Leone (2018-2019)
- Bring Back Our Girls–Human Trafficking Forum
5. Political Awareness and Involvement
- Providing financial assistance and direct services to a number of local, social action, non-profit organizations
- Annual “Women Running for Public Office” forum
- Voter registration drives and phone banking during election cycles
- Delta Days at the State Capitol
- Delta Days in the Nations Capitol
- Hosting of the Divine 9 NC Legislative Day
- Social media voter registration campaign
